With just 32 days until the November election, Angelenos are generally focused on the marquee local race — Mayor Karen Bass’ battle to keep her seat and fend off a challenge from her former ally, Councilmember Nithya Raman.
But behind the scenes, close watchers of L.A. politics have been obsessed with a race that does not yet exist: the shadow primary to capture Raman’s council seat, should she win the mayoral election and leave a sudden vacancy.
As a longtime political reporter, my phone has been ringing off the hook with gossip about what boldface political names might jump into a hypothetical race. I, in turn, have been busy calling up those would-be candidates to suss out their plans. Most say they aren’t ruling out a potential run.
