ON WEDNESDAY THE Los Angeles City Council ordered city officials to come up with a way to reimburse residents within 15 days if they have been wrongly slapped with street-sweeping parking tickets on days when streets were never swept.
The move follows an L.A. Material investigation that found that the city of L.A. issued nearly $1 million in erroneous street sweeping tickets over the last six years. A disproportionate number of those erroneous tickets were meted out in poor neighborhoods where residents can ill afford the $73 fine.
Among those who believe they have received bad tickets is Eunisses Hernandez, the City Councilmember who has been on a year-long push to reform the city’s street-sweeping enforcement system.
“If they are getting me and I am one of the 15 council members, how many more are they getting in the city,” Hernandez told L.A. Material. “Why is this still happening?”
