Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 14. Expect a perfectly lovely summer day today (mid 80s) before the next heat wave and strong Santa Ana winds take hold Thursday. Those winds will bring significant fire danger starting Thursday afternoon.
The mayoral candidates scrapped for undecided voters at the final debate.
In their final debate before the Nov. 3 election, Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Nithya Raman tussled over homelessness, fire response, Hollywood jobs, the police department, housing construction, the response to ICE raids and — somehow, though the debate was only an hour long — several other hot-button municipal issues.
But even as they ranged across the civic landscape, the two women vying to lead Los Angeles returned again and again to two core themes, with Bass painting Raman as unfit to lead the city and Raman arguing that Bass had failed to improve L.A. during her first term in office.
With fewer than three weeks until ballots are due, an unusually large share of voters remain undecided in the race. And though Raman has led in recent polling, both candidates used the debate to try to appeal to those uncommitted voters — or convince them that their opponent was a worse option.
