There’s nothing fancy about the two-tiered sign at Rick’s Drive In & Out, with its faded, 1950s-style logo at the top and its movie theater-style marquee below it. But that’s part of the charm.
The marquee at the busy Elysian Valley intersection of Riverside and Fletcher Drives has become an unlikely — and beloved — community message board for a growing subset of Angelenos.

2. A quick look at the week ahead.
MONDAY: Today is a big day in the state Capitol, as lawmakers face the final deadline to vote on bills from both chambers of the Legislature. After the Aug. 31 legislative deadline, Gov. Gavin Newsom will then have until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the legislation.
And singer D4vd will be back in court for his final arraignment, before standing trial in the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.
