When hijacked airliners hit both towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon twenty-five years ago this morning, the mayor of Los Angeles was out of town. In the uncertain hours after the deadliest terror attack in U.S. history, Americans across the country were unsure whether there would be more violence to come.
Here in Los Angeles, City Council President Alex Padilla — brand-new to the job and all of 28 years old — was the acting mayor, tasked with calming a terrified populace. Mayor James K. Hahn had been on a routine trip to Washington D.C. when the attacks unfolded and would remain stranded across the country for nearly three days, as he desperately tried to get back to L.A.
