Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 5, and you can expect clear, sunny skies, with persistent heat reaching the mid-to-high 80s.
1. What happened to Nikki Finke’s long-gestating book?
If you worked in and around Hollywood during the aughts and early 2010s, you knew Nikki Finke’s byline. She was one of Hollywood’s most-read and, in some quarters, -loathed journalists. Bold and boastful, at times vitriolic and vengeful, Finke reveled in tweaking the industry titans and offering her brand of truth-telling in an industry built on illusion.
“My friends have often joked that if I’m ever found murdered, they’ll never know who did it,” Finke once told Los Angeles Magazine. “The list is too long.”
With her sharp pen, Finke was a relentless scoop-hunter at various outlets before settling in at L.A. Weekly and later her blog, Deadline Hollywood Daily, now known as Deadline.
“You can toe the line, you can skirt the line, or you can say fuck the line,” Finke once said.
But her publish-or-perish instincts had a limit: She toiled on a book for years, only to shelve it in the final hour.
Finke died in 2022. Now, in an L.A. Material exclusive, Finke’s estate has confirmed that it is looking to finally publish her completed manuscript.
